Statewide Smoking Ban Garners Support
GHRA Votes in Favor of Legislation

HOUSTON – February 20, 2009 – On Monday, February 16, Greater Houston Restaurant Association (GHRA) members united with the Texas Restaurant Association (TRA) to vote in support of a statewide smoking ban that would settle any disparities existing as a result of local initiatives.

Since September 2007, the City of Houston has enforced a local smoking ban, prohibiting smoking in public places, including inside restaurants. While this ruling was met with resistance from many local businesses, the GHRA supports the movement across the state because it dissipates any advantage one area might have over another based on variation at the local level. The GHRA’s position remains in support of implementation of a law that is consistent for all businesses, including bars, across city boundaries and with no local discrepancies or options to refuse participation. The Association is vehemently working with the TRA to fortify their grassroots lobbying efforts for legislation that they believe will benefit the restaurant industry by establishing statewide equality.

“The GHRA members are confident that their voices will be heard by state officials, and we look forward to a positive change for the restaurant industry,” said GHRA Executive Director, Rene Zamore. “Our concerted effort with the TRA is focusing on creating language that will not be overly punitive and will equally target business and smokers who violate the law.”

Proud to be 1,116 members strong and growing the Greater Houston Restaurant Association (GHRA) serves as a valuable foundation for restaurants to successfully establish and maintain their businesses. Our mission is to ensure the health of the GHRA and promote the growth of our industry through education, public awareness and governmental affairs.
